Bandits Kill Three Travellers on Sokoto–Isa Road, Police Confirm Attack

Suspected bandits have killed three travellers, including a driver, after intercepting their vehicle along the Marnona–Isa Road in Sokoto State.

The attack occurred on Wednesday evening, October 21, 2026, at Kunawa village in Goronyo Local Government Area.

The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the incident, putting the death toll at three, contrary to unverified social media reports claiming that all occupants of the vehicle were killed.

Police spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said the victims comprised the driver and two other passengers.

The victims were reportedly travelling from Sokoto metropolis towards Isa Local Government Area when the armed men intercepted their vehicle and opened fire.

Possible Link to Government Recruits Unconfirmed

Reports circulating after the attack suggested that some of the passengers might have been among people recently recruited by the Sokoto State Government and invited to the state capital for screening or documentation.

However, the police had not confirmed whether any of the deceased were connected to the recruitment exercise.

In July 2026, the state government announced the recruitment of 3,000 civil servants. It subsequently announced a verification exercise involving 3,100 newly recruited workers in September.

On October 13, the government reportedly announced that salary payments to 3,100 newly recruited employees had commenced.

The alleged connection between the victims and the recruitment exercise remains unverified.

Fresh Concerns Over Road Security

The killings have renewed concerns about the safety of motorists and passengers travelling between Sokoto metropolis and communities in the state’s eastern districts.

Banditry remains a major security challenge across parts of north-western Nigeria, where attacks on travellers and rural communities continue to threaten lives and restrict movement.

The latest incident has raised fresh questions about security arrangements along vulnerable roads and the protection of commuters.

As of the latest available reports, the identities of the deceased had not been officially released.

Details about the attackers, possible arrests and the circumstances surrounding the incident were also still awaited as investigations continued.
